A Letter to God
Synopsis
A farmer named Lencho,
Ek kisan jiska naam Lencho tha,
whose entire corn crop was destroyed by a hailstorm,
jiski poori makka ki fasal barf ke tufaan se barbaad ho gayi thi,
had a strong faith in God.
uska bhagwan par bahut majboot vishwas tha.
Believing that God would help him,
Yeh soch kar ki bhagwan uski madad karega,
he wrote a letter asking for 100 pesos to survive and
replant his fields.
usne ek chitti likhi aur 100 pesos maange taaki wo zinda rahe aur apni khet
mein dobara beej bo sake.
He mailed the letter simply addressed to
"God."
Usne chitti ko sirf "God" likhkar bhej diya.
The postmaster who received the letter was moved by
Lencho's faith.
Chitthi prapt karne wala dak ghar ka adhikari Lencho ke vishwas se prabhavit
hua.
Not wanting to disappoint him,
Usse niraash nahi karna tha,
the postmaster collected money from his employees and
friends to help.
dak ghar ke adhikari ne apne karmchariyon aur doston se paise ikattha kiye
madad ke liye.
However, he could only gather a little more than half
the amount, 70 pesos.
Lekin, wo sirf aadha se thoda zyada paisa ikattha kar saka, 70 pesos.
He put the money in an envelope and signed it
"God."
Usne paisa ek lifaafay mein rakha aur uspar "God" likh diya.
When Lencho came to collect the reply,
Jab Lencho jawaab lene aaya,
he was not surprised to get the money,
use paisa milne par hairani nahi hui,
but he was angry because it was less than he asked
for.
lekin wo gussa tha kyunki ye paisa uske maange se kam tha.
He immediately wrote another letter to God,
Usne turant bhagwan ko ek aur chitti likhi,
complaining that he only received 70 pesos.
shikayat karte hue ki use sirf 70 pesos mile.
He accused the post office employees of being crooks
who must have stolen the rest,
Usne dak ghar ke karmchariyon par ilzaam lagaya ki wo chor hain aur baki paisa
chura liya hoga,
and he asked God to send the remaining money, but not
through the mail.
aur usne bhagwan se kaha ki bacha hua paisa bhejo, lekin dak se nahi.
Detailed Summary
The story revolves around Lencho,
Kahani ghoomti hai Lencho ke around,
a hardworking farmer who lives with his family in a
solitary house on a hill in a fertile valley.
ek mehnati kisan, jo apni family ke saath ek akeli ghar mein rehta hai, jo ek
hill par hai ek upjaau ghaati mein.
From this height, one can see his fields of ripe corn,
Is height se, koi dekh sakta hai uske kheton ko, jo pake hue makke se bhare
hain,
brightened with flowers that promise a good harvest.
jo phoolon se chamak rahe hain, jo acchi fasal ka vaada karte hain.
The only thing missing was rain.
Bas ek cheez ki kami thi — baarish.
Lencho, who knows his fields intimately,
Lencho, jo apne kheton ko achhi tarah jaanta hai,
spends the morning watching the sky toward the
northeast, predicting a downpour.
subah bhar aasman ko dekhte hue guzar deta hai north-east ki taraf, barish hone
ki ummeed mein.
His wife, busy preparing supper, responds with quiet
faith,
Uski patni, jo raat ka khana taiyar kar rahi hai, shanti se vishwas ke saath
kehti hai,
“Yes, God willing.”
“Ji, bhagwan ki marzi se.”
While the older children work in the fields,
Jab bade bacche kheton mein kaam karte hain,
the younger ones play near the house until called for
dinner.
chhote bacche ghar ke paas khelte hain jab tak dinner ke liye bulaya na jaye.
As predicted by Lencho, rain begins during the meal.
Jaise Lencho ne socha tha, khane ke time barish shuru ho jaati hai.
The sky darkens with enormous clouds,
Aasman bade badalon se kaala ho jaata hai,
and the air becomes fresh and sweet.
aur hawa taaza aur meethi ho jaati hai.
Lencho goes out to enjoy the rain on his body,
Lencho baarish ka maza lene ke liye bahar nikalta hai,
marveling at the drops, which he compares to coins,
boondon ko dekh kar hairan hota hai, jinhe wo sikke ke jaise compare karta hai,
delighted at the thought of the blessing the rain will
bring to his crops.
soch kar khush hota hai ki barish uske fasal ke liye kitni barkat layegi.
Suddenly, however, the gentle rain turns into a
destructive hailstorm.
Lekin achanak, halka barish ek tabah karne wale aandhi barf mein badal jaata
hai.
Large hailstones fall like silver coins,
Bade barf ke tukde chandi ke sikke jaise girte hain,
pounding the house, garden, and valley for an hour.
ghante bhar ghar, bagicha, aur ghaati par girte hain.
By the time the storm ends, the cornfield is
destroyed;
Jab aandhi khatam hoti hai, makke ka khet barbaad ho chuka hota hai;
trees are stripped of leaves, flowers obliterated.
pedon ke patte gir gaye, phool khatam ho gaye.
Lencho, surveying the ruined field, feels immense
sadness.
Lencho, barbaad kheton ko dekh kar, gahra dukh mehsoos karta hai.
He tells his sons that even a plague of locusts would
have left more than the hailstorm.
Wo apne beton se kehta hai ki sasti ke aataand se bhi jyada kuch bacha hota
hailstorm ke mukable.
His heart fills with despair as he contemplates the
coming hunger:
Uska dil nirasha se bhar jaata hai soch kar aane wale bhukh ke baare mein:
“All our work, for nothing. There’s no one who can
help us.”
“Humari saari mehnat, bekaar. Koi bhi hume madad nahi kar sakta.”
Yet, amid this hopelessness, a single hope remains:
divine assistance.
Lekin is nirasha ke beech, ek hi umeed bachi hai: bhagwan ki madad.
Lencho firmly believes that God, who sees all and
knows what is in people’s hearts, will help him.
Lencho pakka maanta hai ki bhagwan, jo sab dekhte hain aur jaante hain logon ke
dil mein kya hai, uski madad karenge.
Despite being a man who works like an ox in the
fields, Lencho knows how to write.
Khet mein bail ki tarah kaam karne wala bhi, Lencho likhna jaanta hai.
On the following Sunday, at daybreak, he begins
writing a letter to God.
Agle Sunday, subah ke waqt, wo bhagwan ko chitti likhna shuru karta hai.
In it, he requests one hundred pesos to sow his fields
again and to support his family until the next harvest.
Isme, wo 100 pesos maangta hai taaki apne khet dobara boye aur family ko agle
fasal tak support kare.
He explains the damage caused by the hailstorm.
Wo hailstorm se hui nuksaan ko bhi batata hai.
After finishing the letter, he writes “To God” on the
envelope, places the letter inside, and takes it to town himself.
Chitti khatam karne ke baad, wo lifaafay par “To God” likhta hai, chitti andar
rakhta hai, aur khud sheher le jaata hai.
At the post office, he affixes a stamp and drops the
letter into the mailbox.
Dak ghar mein, wo stamp chipkata hai aur chitti mailbox mein dal deta hai.
The post office employees notice Lencho’s unusual
letter and are amused.
Dak ghar ke karmchari Lencho ki ajeeb chitti dekhte hain aur hans padte hain.
One postman shows it to his boss, laughing at the
address.
Ek postman apne boss ko dikhata hai, address par hans rahe hain.
The postmaster, a friendly and jovial man, also laughs
but soon grows serious.
Postmaster, ek dostana aur khush mizaj aadmi, bhi hanste hain lekin jaldi
serious ho jaate hain.
Touched by Lencho’s unwavering faith in God, he
remarks,
Lencho ke bhagwan par atal vishwas se prabhavit hoke, wo kehte hain,
“What faith! I wish I had the faith of the man who
wrote this letter. Starting up a correspondence with God!”
“Kitna vishwas hai! Kaash mujhe bhi wo vishwas hota jo isne chitti likhne wale
aadmi ke paas hai. Bhagwan ke saath correspondence shuru karna!”
Determined not to shake Lencho’s belief, the
postmaster decides to respond.
Lencho ke vishwas ko todna nahi chahte hue, postmaster decide karte hain jawaab
dene ka.
Realizing that fulfilling the request requires more
than goodwill,
Samajh kar ki request poori karna sirf achhe iraade se nahi hota,
he collects contributions from his employees, donates
part of his own salary, and convinces friends to contribute.
wo apne karmchariyon se paisa ikattha karte hain, apni salary ka hissa dete
hain, aur doston ko contribute karne ke liye manaate hain.
Although he cannot raise the full hundred pesos, he
manages to gather a little over half the requested amount.
Halaanki wo poore 100 pesos nahi ikattha kar paate, wo thoda aadha se zyada
paisa ikattha kar lete hain.
He places the money in an envelope addressed to Lencho
and includes a note signed simply, “God.”
Wo paisa ek lifaafay mein daalte hain Lencho ke liye aur ek note bhi daalte
hain, sirf sign karke, “God.”
The following Sunday, Lencho arrives early at the post
office, eagerly looking for his letter.
Agle Sunday, Lencho jaldi dak ghar aata hai, apni chitti ke liye utsuk hokar.
The postman hands it to him while the postmaster
watches, experiencing quiet satisfaction at having helped someone in need.
Postman use chitti deta hai, aur postmaster dekhte hain, shanti aur santosh
mehsoos karte hain kisi ki madad karne par.
Lencho is not surprised to see the money, showing his
absolute faith that God has answered his request.
Lencho paisa dekhkar hairaan nahi hota, apna poora vishwas dikhata hai ki
bhagwan ne uski request sun li.
However, as he counts the money, he becomes angry.
Lekin, paisa ginte hue, wo gussa ho jaata hai.
Lencho cannot fathom that God would make a mistake or
send only part of what he asked for.
Lencho samajh nahi paata ki bhagwan galti karenge ya sirf kuch hi bhejenge jo
usne maanga tha.
Convinced that something went wrong, he immediately
begins to write another letter.
Yakeen karte hue ki kuch galat hua, wo turant doosri chitti likhna shuru karta
hai.
Using the public writing table, he carefully composes
his message, struggling to express himself.
Public writing table ka use karte hue, wo dhyan se apna message likhta hai,
apne aap ko vyakt karne mein struggle karte hue.
Once finished, he buys a stamp, affixes it, and sends
the letter back.
Chitti khatam karne ke baad, wo stamp kharidta hai, chipkata hai, aur chitti
wapas bhej deta hai.
The note, addressed to God, reads:
Note, jo God ke liye address kiya gaya hai, kuch is tarah hai:
“Of the money that I asked for, only seventy pesos
reached me.
“Jo paisa maanga tha, sirf 70 pesos hi mujhe mila.
Send me the rest, since I need it very much.
Bacha hua paisa bhejo, kyunki mujhe bahut zarurat hai.
But don’t send it through the mail because the post
office employees are a bunch of crooks.”
Lekin dak ke through mat bhejo kyunki dak ghar ke karmchari chor hain.”
Lencho’s unwavering faith remains intact,
Lencho ka atal vishwas jaisa ka taisa hai,
but he blames human intermediaries for the perceived
shortfall,
lekin wo insani beechwale logon ko ilzaam deta hai kam paisa aane ka,
completely unaware that the money had been collected
and sent by the very post office employees he distrusts.
bilkul nahi jaanta ki paisa wahi karmchari ikattha karke bhej chuke hain jinke
upar wo bharosa nahi karta.
The story humorously yet poignantly captures the
themes of faith, human generosity, innocence, and irony.
Kahani mazedaar aur saath hi bhavuk tareeke se dikhati hai vishwas, insani
udarta, masoomiyat, aur irony ke themes ko.
Lencho’s trust in God is absolute, reflecting a deep
belief that divine help will come even in the face of total disaster.
Lencho ka bhagwan par vishwas poora hai, dikhata hai ki wo gehra vishwas rakhta
hai ki bhagwan ki madad aayegi chahe poori tabahi ho jaaye.
The postmaster and the post office employees, moved by
Lencho’s faith, act with selfless kindness, illustrating human compassion.
Postmaster aur karmchari, Lencho ke vishwas se prabhavit hoke, nishkapat daya
dikhate hain, insani daya ko dikhate hain.
Yet, the irony lies in Lencho’s misattribution of the
shortfall, blaming the very people who acted charitably,
Lekin, irony is baat mein hai ki Lencho ne galat insaan par ilzaam lagaya, unhi
logon par jo dayalu kaam kiye.
underscoring both the purity and naivety of his faith.
ye dikhata hai uske vishwas ki shuddhata aur masoomiyat.
Through this narrative, the author highlights the
power of hope, the innocence of simple faith, and the unexpected ways in which
human generosity can manifest.
Is kahani ke zariye, lekhak ummeed ki shakti, simple vishwas ki masoomiyat, aur
insani udarta ke anokhe tareeke dikhate hain.
